Evidence of Cobble Habitat Preference in Age-0 Winter Flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus

چکیده
Juvenile winter flounder utilize a wide variety of habitats, including those that are structurally complex. We investigated the habitat preferences of age-0 winter flounder in sand and cobble of varying complexity in the laboratory. Fish were observed every half hour for six hours in tanks with four cobble treatments; bare sand, sand with low complexity cobble, sand with intermediate complexity cobble, and sand with high complexity cobble. Habitat preference was inferred when the proportion of observations in treatments were greater than what would be expected by chance based on availability. Results suggest age-0 winter flounder strongly prefer cobble to sand, particularly cobble of an intermediate complexity. This study serves as a first step in the investigation of the importance of cobble habitat to juvenile winter flounder. It is recommended that this hypothesis be field tested to further investigate the use of this habitat type by juvenile winter flounder.

Predator–prey relations between age-1 1 summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus, Linnaeus) and age-0 winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus, Walbaum): predator diets, prey selection, and effects of sediments and macrophytes
Laboratory experiments and weekly trammel net surveys in the Navesink River, New Jersey (USA) were used to examine the predator–prey interaction between age-1 1 summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus) and age-0 winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus). Winter flounder (24–67 mm TL) were the dominant piscine prey of summer flounder (n 5 95, 252–648 mm TL) collected in trammel nets. We obs...

Laboratory experiments and field observations in shallow water habitats in the Navesink River /Sandy Hook Bay estuarine system (NSHES), New Jersey, USA, were used to examine the predator–prey relationship between the striped searobin (Prionotus evolans: Linnaeus) and young-of-the-year (YOY) winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus: Walbaum). متن کاملA New PCR-Based Method Shows That Blue Crabs (Callinectes sapidus (Rathbun)) Consume Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum))
Winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) once supported robust commercial and recreational fisheries in the New York (USA) region, but since the 1990s populations have been in decline. Available data show that settlement of young-of-the-year winter flounder has not declined as sharply as adult abundance, suggesting that juveniles are experiencing higher mortality following settlement. Th...

The role of blood-borne glucose in the restoration of white muscle glycogen following exhaustive exercise in the active, pelagic rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the more sluggish, benthic winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) were examined. During recovery from exhaustive exercise, the animals were injected with a bolus of universally labelled [14C]glucose via dorsal aortic (t...
